Fermentation and Health

May 12, 2026 8:00 a.m.

Christian Kuhn has been working with fermentation for nearly two decades. He started at 16, building a backyard Pinot Noir vineyard with his father to produce natural wine using wild yeast and native bacteria. Since then, he’s worked at a kombucha brewery, at wineries in Stag’s Leap and Yountville, and founded Noble House Spice, a wholesale spice company that supplies and consults on product formulation for pickle and fermented food companies. He runs TheFermentGuide.com, a resource site offering beginner-friendly recipes, instructions, and equipment guidance for home fermenters, and recently represented the site at the inaugural Stanford Fermentation Conference, where much of the latest research on fermented foods and human health was presented. Christian has personally produced every major category of ferment, from miso and soy sauce to sauerkraut, sourdough, kombucha, and koji. He lives in San Rafael with his wife Meg, their newborn daughter, and their dog Barley.

Talk Preview: Fermentation and Health
Long before anyone understood microbiology, humans were already fermenting food to make it last and to make water safe to drink. We’ll start there and follow the thread forward, through the surprising ways the human gut co-evolved with the bacteria living in it, and into the contemporary science showing that fermented foods can reduce inflammation, shape the gut-brain axis, and even change what your body craves and how much of your meal it actually absorbs. Plus, fermentation is behind some of the tastiest things we eat and drink, so we’ll spend some time there too.

Rewiring Community: New Models for Human Connection & Impact

May 26, 2026 8:00 a.m.
In this inspiring and deeply personal talk, Sally Newson shares the journey that led her to discover the profound rewards of living a life in service to others. What began as a calling to help has evolved into a mission to build innovative, community-driven solutions that elevate lives and expand opportunity—especially for young people and underserved populations in Marin County and beyond. Through powerful stories and real-world impact, Sally explores how service not only transforms those being helped, but also brings purpose, connection, and meaning to those who give.

Sally will highlight the vision and impact behind her initiatives—including Karma Club Teen, The Kove community wellness hub, Karma Scholars academic programs, and the Go.Love.Serve platform (www.loveserve.org)—each designed to remove barriers, foster belonging, and create pathways to brighter futures. Attendees will leave with a renewed perspective on the power of service, and tangible ideas for how they, too, can make a meaningful difference in their own communities.

First Responder Therapy Dogs

Jun. 09, 2026 8:00 a.m.

First responders are our everyday heroes, bravely facing immense physical and mental challenges. From firefighters to paramedics, dispatch centers, law enforcement, and search and rescue personnel, these brave individuals often confront extreme stress, PTSD, depression, and even suicidal impulses. First Responder Therapy Dogs provides trained therapy dogs that offer emotional support directly to on-duty heroes. Research shows they reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and elevate mood—helping first responders focus on their communities while caring for themselves. In 2025 alone, they reached over 70,000 first responders nationwide. The organization has more than 500 certified therapy dog teams, spanning 46 states, from Alabama to Wisconsin.

Michelle Detrick brings 17 years of experience working as a paramedic in Oakland and as a firefighter/paramedic for the Berkeley Fire Department and Central Marin Fire Department. She began her teaching career in 2004 as an EMT instructor for the College of Marin and has been an instructor for her peers throughout her career in the fire service.
